Some pictures of our trip in Reunion Island...
Our impressions of Reunion Island...
> Reunion Island
Reunion is quite a bit bigger than Shetland. A lot of the time I felt like I was just in France and not on an island in the Indian Ocean.
La Reunion was a very nice place. I had lots of trees unlike Shetland. It was very hot and humid.
> The people
In Reunion Island, there were a lot of different ethnicities and people seemed really nice.
Everyone seemed really nice and people greeted people by kissing both cheeks. I miss all the pupils and teachers from Spain and Reunion.
The people in Entre-Deux seemed very nice and every adult I met seemed to know a good bit of English.
> The school
The school, the colours and the layout was very like my old school in France. The canteen line was very long.
The school was nice and the rooms were all numbered in order to help you find the one you needed to go to.
I wouldn’t like to go to a big school like “College Le Dimitile”. There are so many people and it is way too crowded. The food at their school canteen is bad compared to ours. It makes me appreciate our school dinners more.
There were a lot of pupils and it was very loud. The dinner queue was confusing and very long. It was different but a nice school and I liked the classrooms.
> Entre-Deux
Entre-Deux was a lovely town. It was very beautiful and tropical. They call it a village but it is a lot bigger than the village where I live.
Entre-Deux was a nice town with lots of cafés.
There was many more people in Entre-Deux and more shops than in Yell. It had a fresh bakery.
It was very pretty and there were lots of trees and mountains. It was a big village with lots of people. It was very hot.
> Languages
At home they spoke a weird but hilarious mix of French English and Spanish.
I understood mostly everything that was said to me. By the end of the week I was getting better at speaking French.
It was nice to hear Creole and I learned 2 sentences : “Mi aime a ou” and “Mi connais pas”
My French greatly improved while I was away, especially my knowledge of irregular verbs. I’m better at listening to French which I found especially difficult before.
It was challenging. They speak Creole so some words in French mean something different in Creole.
I tried to speak as much French as I could. I understood some to the conversations. When I got confused I reverted to English.
They all spoke really good English so if I was stuck and couldn’t say something in French we could still communicate really well.
They mostly spoke to me in English but I tried to reply in French.
We used French and it was very hard. We worked out a way where they would attempt to speak to me in English and I would attempt to speak to them in French. I was very nervous at the start but as time went on I got more confident.
> Homelife
The family I stayed with were lovely and kind. The mother was funny and the baby was very cute. Her mamie and all her aunties, uncles and cousins were fun and nice. I would love to go and see them all again. I miss them very much.
The family I stayed with were very friendly and kind.
In houses, sinks are rarely in the same room as the toilet.
Home life was good. We watched lots of films together and played games. It was quite similar to our home life but they had their dinner at 7-9 o’clock.
> Memorable moments
One of the best days was with the family I stayed with, when we went on a boat trip to see dolphins, to a restaurant on a beach and then kayaking in the sea.
The whole experience was great !
Going camping and going to the beach with the family.
I went swimming in the sea ans saw tons of tropical fish with the family. Going up the Dimitile mountain and being in the clouds. Going to school and to the volcano. Realising how far away from other places we were.
The mountain walk, the river day and the street market.
> Food
We ate a lot of Reunion food like “bouchons”, rice, beans and Reunion sausage.
They cook a lot of home cooked meals.
They eat a lot of cheese. Cheese is like a pudding there.
They didn’t use plates for their toasts in the morning. They ate very late and we went to bed straight after eating most nights.
