Shetland Islands
what we do
with our european partners.
Shetland is on the edge of Europe but thanks to the internet, regular communication, planning and organising 3 trips, we feel closer to our friends from Reunion Island and Andalucia. We are also increasingly aware of our place in the world.
Spanish brochure
June August 2016
All 10 Spanish families hosted a French and a Spanish ambassador during our trip to Andalusia. This facilitated working on the content of the Spanish brochure throughout our 10 days there, as each group of three nationalities were under one roof, to research and illustrate their theme.
Trip to Andalusia
May June 2016
We spent 10 days in Cortijos Nuevos in Andalusia. The way of life there is very different to ours, yet we felt very at home. Since June 2016 a few people from Yell have made the journey there eager to meet their Spanish friends on home grounds. Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome !
Multilingual translation of regional expressions
May June 2016
Our pupils, familiar with Shetland dialect, were interested in Creole and how it is perceived. They also found out that Andalusia has its own local language. Gathering a sample of expressions and translating them in French, English, Spanish but also Shetland dialect, Andalusian and Creole was fun but not so easy !
Primary Schools Connection
November 2015
Before travelling to La Reunion, Annette made contact with Ludovic Fiori, a primary teacher at Ecole des alizes, who kindly organised for her to visit his class twice during the trip.
This was most interesting, allowing both teachers to discuss similarities and differences between the school systems, and share ideas for teaching French and English as well as other subjects. Both classes of pupils (Ludovic’s and Annette’s) were delighted to be involved in the project, and have since been in correspondence, sending letters and photos to their counterparts across the world. The children have expressed a wish to keep up this communication, in the hope that some time in the future they might get to meet each other.
Sharing our Eco Schools work
June 2015
On Monday 8th June our Spanish and French guests experienced a school day. The timetable included Music, PE, Home Economics, Technical, Library. Two 50 minutes period were dedicated to sharing our Eco Schools work. First, Logan presented some of the most common local wildlife. Then visitors checked on the produce we grow in our Polytunnel including our new composting facilities. They also took a look at our recycling : plastic, paper, textile and batteries.
Exhibition of Arts and Crafts
June 2015
In May and June 2015 we held an exhibition of arts and crafts from Reunion Island, Andalusia and Yell. It mainly consisted of works from the Spanish French and British judges of our logo competition but we also exhibited a range of local produce from Reunion Island and Andalusia. Pupils, Staff, Parents and the Yell community got a culinary and artistic glimpse of where our Erasmus partners come from.
Winning logo for “Treasure”
March 2015
Guillaume Attila won the Logo competition with a great design. Well done Guillaume !
We use it regularly on information about our project : Emails, letters, posters. We also put it on a cap for each of our project’s ambassadors to wear. The Spanish caps are green, the French ones are red and the Shetland ones are blue.
Who is who?
September 2014
This activity was a fun way to introduce who was who. Our pupils wrote descriptions of each other that the French and Spanish pupils then had to match with the correct person on a photo. It was an opportunity to show our pupils’ ability to communicate in French. In return, we read and matched the Spanish and French descriptions of themselves with their photos and got an idea of their ability to write in English.
eTwinning - “Treasure”
2014-2016
This project involves 3 schools: Mid Yell Junior High School (UK), Collège Le Dimitile (France) and IES El Yelmo (Spain).
Since Mid Yell JHS and College Le Dimitile started working together in August 2012 we have created several Twinspaces. At school, pupils use Twinspace to communicate with each other generally in their own native language, participate in forums, post photos, video clips and documents. From home, they also use traditional social media. It is a great motivational tool which encourages pupils to use their foreign language while getting to know pupils their own age of a different culture.
eTwinning - “ Deux Îles ”
2013-2014
Main Project : “Le Livre de la renonmmée”
A book of well know local people written in both the foreign and native language including some Créole and Shetland dialect. Pupils in Mid Yell used “2 stars and a wish” to comment on the quality of pupils from Collège Le Dimitile’s English. This gave pupils from Reunion Island a bit of an insight into Scottish Education. It also made pupils notice similarities, mainly the fact that both far away islands are filled with local talent but also that people are very family orientated.

eTwinning - “Islanders” / " Critiques de Films "
2013-2014
Main Project 2013-2014 : “Critiques de Films”
A TV programme presenting favourite films. Pupils in Mid Yell nominated “Best Performances ». It was an opportunity to practice telling a story and giving opinions. Pupils also realised that we live in a small world as most chosen films were ones both nationalities knew of or had seen. It was fun watching extracts of “Brave” or “Frozen” in French. Most agreed though that original versions are best, another reason why we should learn foreign languages.
“Islanders” received a European Quality Award 2014.
